Crispin Wins Pole, Crashes Hard
August 15th, 2008
The crew has been busy getting the Royal Purple/Phil's Tire Spec Miata ready for Road Atlanta since we came back from Mid-Ohio. Crispin has never raced here before but we expect him to do well. Crispin adapts to new tracks very well.
We left on Wednesday evening so Crispin can practice on Friday. Arrived Thursday late and set up the pits for Friday. Crispin has four practice sessions which will give the crew time to get the Spec Miata race ready for Saturday. Crispin adapted to the track very well and loves it. Road Atlanta is a very fast track. The Royal Purple/Phil's Tire Spec Miata rolls very well on this track Phil's tires are great have a lot of grip. Friday practice has gone well we will get set up for the race tomorrow.
Crispin went out for practice in the morning and turned a 1:44.808 which is unreal for here at this time of year the second place car was a 1:45.887. Will get the Spec Miata ready for qualifying. Crispin went out for the 20 minute qualify in which he was pole with a time of 1:44.798 which is still unheard of. The second place car was a 1:45.671. Needless to say we are not liked very well. Crispin has never been at this track before and the other drivers have. They even tried teaming with drafting trying to push each other to the front and holding cars back to get them in the way of Crispin to slow him down.
The crew put new tires on for the race for the ones Crispin qualified on looked worn we did not think they would last the race so we put the new ones on. Unfortunately this would be the wrong choice for in the first race lap the tires were too greasy and Crispin lost grip and ended in the concrete wall in turn one totaling the car. When Crispin got out of the in care medical center he told Grandpa that he saved his life. Grandpa had put extra protection around Crispin's head like the NASCAR seats are and between it and the Hans device it saved him from serious injury. He was able to walk away.
The crew loaded the car up with the help of the track tow truck and headed for home. They will have to get a donor car put together for the Nationals which is four weeks away. They have a lot of work ahead of them. Our last thoughts are that everyone should have head protection built in their seats and use Hans devices it saved Crispin. When he hit the concrete wall all the tires flew on top of the car and passed his head but the head restraint kept them away from Crispin. We are now 4th in the Teen Challenge points but will head to the Mid-Ohio Nationals and do our best there.
