Beaver Sweeps First Round of COMMA Season
March 28th, 2007
Tulsa, OK - His new car still unfinished, 2006 COMMA Rookie of the Year Crispin Beaver hopped into the old one and make quick work of the field en route to a pair of GT-2 wins last weekend at the Hallett Motor Racing Circuit just outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Crispin’s crew unloaded the Royal Purple/Phillip’s 66/ Tynis Construction Mazda RX-7 off the trailer Saturday morning for the first time since their championship race last autumn. The CBM crew had been working on a new chassis all winter but was unable to finish it time for the season opener on the weekend of March 24th, forcing Crispin to drive his old car. The old warhorse proved sturdy and fast in Saturday’s practice, requiring only minor adjustments. In Saturday afternoon's non-points race Beaver coasted to a GT-2 class win and a second-place finish overall.
The crew prepared the car for Sunday's points race and Crispin qualified on the outside of the first row with a lap time of 1:21.519, barely two-tenths off the overall fast time set by the top GT-1 qualifier.
In the six-lap qualifying event that followed Crispin won the GT-2 class and finished second overall, repeating the feat with an identical performance in the feature event of the day. The day's work gave Beaver a solid lead in the 2007 COMMA GT-2 points race.
However, his next race will be at Rusty Wallace's new speedway in Iowa next month in NASA's midwest division. It will be Crispin's first outing with the series. He will run as many NASA races as possible this season while continuing to drive in the COMMA series as well.
