News 2009 Road America June Sprints

Everyone needs to go to the June Sprints at least once in their racing career. Road America is a very intimidating race track. The park itself is big and the race track very fast.

Our first practice was on Thursday for the Tune & Test. After testing made a lot of changes to adjust to the track. Crispin took the Spec Miata out first. On Friday’s practice there were 69 cars on the track: SM, SSB, SSC and T3, 42 Spec Miatas to start. Crispin was 5th fast in the first practice session but the car had more in it. It threatened rain most of the weekend. We are a second off the top four so we will adjust the car for qualifying.

Took the Gt2 car out in the Tune & Test on Thursday but it needs a lot of adjusting having mechanical problems. Took the car out for Fridays practice and it is still having problems. Brought it in after three laps for the crew chief to work on.

There are two qualifying sessions for the Phil’s Tire/Royal Purple/Tynis Construction Spec Miata. In the first session we qualified 14th out of 42 cars but 67 cars on the track. Came in and the crew chief made some adjustments for the second qualify. We qualified 8th in the second qualify but are two seconds off the leader. The crew chief will figure out what to do to go faster.

GT2On Saturday Crispin will qualify the Gt2 Phil’s Tire/Royal Purple/Tynis construction Mazda Rx7 for the race on Sunday. Went out for the first qualify in the Gt2 Mazda Rx7 and qualified 7th out of 9 cars 40 in the group of Gt 1’s,Gt2’s and Gt3’s. Crispin’s Mazda Rx 7 is still not running right. The crew chief has been fighting the problem all weekend.

Next we raced the Spec Miata which was very fast. Crispin said the adjustments the Crew Chief made were great. Unfortunately in the second lap there were cars out of control in front of him and while trying to avoid them Crispin got into some oil and went off the track not finishing the race.We were a top five car but will try again next time.

On Sunday qualified the Mazda Rx 7 Gt 2 car 4th in the second qualifying out of 9 cars but 40 totals in the group. Mechanical problems still haunting the crew chief. Will do the best we can with what we have. We are two seconds off the leader. Raced for 14 laps with the car giving Crispin all kinds of mechanical problems. Ended up 6th fighting the car all the way. When the car ran good it was a very fast car but was not consistent enough to get to the front. Both cars handled great but had to fight mechanical demons all weekend.

Will come back to Road America for the Runoffs but our next race is at Hallett in two weeks.

Thank you Dave for the advice, Uncle George (pit crew and advisor), Geoff and of course the Crew Chief Grandpa. He really had his work cut out for him this weekend but he never gave up. Hopefully Grandpa and Crispin will be able to get a Spec Miata together for Hallett.

Thank you to Crispin’s fans for following all the races he attends. And reading about his results on his website and my laps.

Would also like to thank Royal Purple for the special oil they supplied us with . Phil’s Tire Service for the perfectly shaved P888 tires. Scotts Rental for all his help as a friend and the special machine work. And all Crispin’s friends and family that have helped him along the way so far.

Thank You
